In the 1930âs, The public Enemy crystallized the theme of Little Caesar and delved even more deeply into the making of a gangster. Directed by William Wellman the film follows two young boys and their growth from shoplifters to hardened criminals. It stars James Cagney and Jean Harlow (whose role is minimal, yet billed on every poster). More coherent and focused than Little Caesar (it included dates to orient the audience when time passed); Public Enemy was also more violent, and helped to spur the cry for censorship.
